100-share stock certificated in the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad Company, endorsed by Francis Marion Drake less than a year after he stepped down as Governor of Iowa.
Stock certificate endorsed "Francis. M. Drake". 2 pages, 11¾x7, 1 sheet, front and verso. Dec. 14, 1898, transferred Jan. 4, 1899. Stock certificate no. 3051 for 100 shares, at $100 each, in the Chicago and Eastern Railroad Company. Drake transferred this certificate to Isaac W. Sherril on Jan. 4, 1899. The Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad Company was founded in 1877, consolidating three other railroads in the Chicago area. It declared bankruptcy in 1933, during the Great Depression, but re-emerged just before World War II in 1940. It continued operations until 1976. Drake had stepped down as Governor of Iowa on Jan. 13, 1898. Drake (1830-1903) was Governor of Iowa (1895-1898). He fought in the American Civil War and mustered out a brigadier general. He also endowed Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; not surprisingly, the school is named after him. Cancellation holes not near signature. Pin size holes. Cancellation stamp not near signature.
