GENERAL FRANCIS NICHOLLS
As President of Louisiana's Funding Board, Governor Nicholls approved
an exchange of older bond obligations for a new consolidated bond
Autograph Endorsement signed: "Francis Nicholls" as
Governor and President of the Funding Board, 1 page 15¼x13¼. New Orleans,
1879 March 17. Nicholls approves the conversion of matured bonds, originally
issued December 22, 1865, and submitted by a New Orleans resident into a new
bond obligation bearing 8% interest. Nicholls (1834-1912) was an officer
in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He rose to the
rank of brigadier general and participated in the First Battle of Bull Run
(July 21, 1861), losing his left arm during the First Battle of
Winchester (May 25, 1862) and his right foot during the Battle of
Chancellorsville (April 30 to May 6, 1863). Nicholls was also Governor of
Louisiana (1877-1880, 1888-1892), during which he fought corruption and
chaired the Louisiana Constitutional Convention of 1879. After his second stint
as Governor, Nicholls became Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court
(1892-1911). Lightly toned and creased. 2 vertical 3 horizontal fold creases.
Multiple notches at top and bottom edges. minor ink smudges throughout document
all legible. Nail-sized hole at upper right edge. Otherwise fine condition.
