GENERAL FRANCIS REDDING TILLOU NICHOLLS
Document signed as Governer, listing $6,772.50 in Louisiana's obligations,
which were to be exchagned for bonds, in 1878, while he was Governor of
Louisiana.
Documentsigned"Francis T Nichols" as President of
the Louisiana Funding Board. 1 page, 15½x13¼, docketed on verso. April
29, 1878. This partially-printed document 14 different items, worth
$6,772.50, of Louisiana's obligations, which were to be exchanged for New
Consolidated Bonds. Nicholls (1834-1912) was an officer in the
Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He rose to the rank of
brigadier general and participated in the First Battle of Bull Run (July
21, 1861), losing his left arm during the First Battle of Winchester (May
25, 1862) and his right foot during the Battle of Chancellorsville (April
30 to May 6, 1863). Nicholls was also Governor of Louisiana (1877-1880,
1888-1892), during which he fought corruption and chaired the Louisiana
Constitutional Convention of 1879. After his second stint as Governor, Nicholls
became Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court (1892-1911). Fragile.
Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Show-through from docket touches signature
and handwriting. Handwriting, but not signature, has bled and been smeared
lightly but is legible. Ink transference touches handwriting but not signature.
Random ink stains. Missing bottom left corner. Rounded bottom right corner.
Light tear at bottom edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Separations at top and
bottom edges along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
