FREDERICK F. RUSSELL
A rare signature from the U.S. Army physician who perfected the typhoid vaccine, signing on a check for the amount of $40.00
Check signed: "Frederick Fuller Russell", in black ink, 7½x3. Check no. a 34 drawn on the account of Frederick F. Russell at the Riggs National Bank. Payable to the Bank for the amount of $40.00. Frederick F. Russell (1870-1960) was a U.S. Army physician, known for his perfection and implementation of the typhoid vaccine. Studying under Sir Almorth Wright, Russell observed the professor, and returned to conduct trials on his research. His methods in changing from a one liter flask to a small glass ampoule helped ensure that all typhoid micro-organisms were killed, creating a more effective vaccine. The new vaccine was implemented as mandatory in 1911, reducing the once morbid disease. After retiring from the Army, Russell became a reserve officer, and in 1920 was appointed Brigadier General of the Medical Officers Reserve Corps. After retiring from service entirely, Russell still pursued medicine, becoming the director of the International Health Board of the Rockefeller Foundation. Cancellation holes. Corners slightly worn. Ink stamps. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
