GEORGE D. JOHNSTON. ALS: "Geo D. Johnston," 1p, 5x8,
Tuscaloosa, Ala., 1876 September 21. In full: "I notice that the
Memorial Association of Charleston, South Carolina, wishes the autographs of
several Confdt Genls from Alabama; & among the members that of Geo. H.
Johnston. There was no such Genl officer in the Confedt service from this state.
As I was the only Genl officer in that service, from Alabama, by the name of
Johnston, & as the difference between my name, & that of the Johnston,
published by you, is so slight, existing only in the initial of the middle name,
I took it for granted that you refer to me, & therefore at once, & with
pleasure forward you my autograph-". George D. Johnston, whose first
military service was at the battle of First Manassas, was commissioned Major of
the 25th Alabama 1862 and he and his regiment saw action in every battle of the
Army of Tennessee from Shiloh to Bentonville. Shortly after his promotion to
Brigadier General on July 24, 1864, he was wounded at Ezra Church and served on
crutches. Fine condition.
