Manuscript Letter signed: "Geo. D. Ruggles" as Assistant
Adjutant General, 1 page, 8x10. Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D.
C., 1862 May 8. To Commanding Officer, 56th Regiment New York Volunteers,
Headquarters Department of the Shenandoah. In full: "Sir, I am
instructed to say that the muster and pay rolls of your regiment have not been
received at this office. Please see them promptly forwarded in the future. I am,
Sir, very respectfully your obedient servant". George D. Ruggles
(1833-1904), a West Pointer (1855), served on the staffs of Union
Generals Pope and McClellan before transferring to staff duty in Washington.
From 1865 to 1891, he served as Adjutant General for various regional
Departments of the US Army, becoming US Adjutant General (and a brigadier
general) from November 1893 until his 1898 retirement. The commander of the
56th New York, not named in this document, was Col. Charles Van Wyck.

the New York National Guard. It was mobilized following the 9/11 attack on the
World Trade Center. Fingerprints on right margin. Normal mailing folds. Toned
along edges. Corners and edges worn. Adhesive residue on verso. Small stains
throughout.
