Autograph Letter signed: "Green B. Raum", 1 page, 8½x11 lined paper. Washington, D.C., 1886 March 22. To Ben W. Austin, Secretary, Northwestern Literary and Historical Society, Sioux City, Iowa. In full: "I am in receipt of your valued favor of the twelfth inst. at Harrisburg, Ill., informing me that I had been unanimously elected an honorary member of your Society. This expression of your appreciation and recognition of the services re3ndered by me in the military and civil service of the government is very gratifying. I accept the honorary membership tendered, and request that you will convey to your members my best wishes for the success of your Society and their individual prosperity and happiness. Sincerely yrs". Green Berry Raum (1829-1909), a Douglas Democrat in 1860, joined the Union Army as a major in September 1861. He later commanded a regiment and then a brigade, rising to the rank of brigadier general. Raum led an important charge at the siege of Corinth, was wounded at Missionary Ridge, and was active in the campaigns of Vicksburg, Atlanta and the Carolinas. Elected as a Republican to one term in the US House from Illinois (1867-1869), he served thereafter as US Commissioner of Internal Revenue (1876-1883) and Commissioner of Pensions (1889-1893). He wrote several books on politics and Illinois history.Horizontal and vertical folds. Top left corner missing. Adhesive and paper residue at top margin area and on verso. Soiled and toned. Creased.
