HENRY A. WISE. ALS: "Henry A. Wise", 1p, 5x4½. Richmond, Virginia, 1855 December 31. To unknown recipient. Begins: "Dr. Sir". In full: "I comply withe (sic) your request of the 21st inst. by subscribing myself Yours respectfully". After serving in Congress as a Whig, then a Democrat, Henry A. Wise (1806-1876) was Governor of Virginia from 1857-1860. His last act as Governor was to sign the death warrant for John Brown, the abolitionist who led a daring uprising by slaves at Harper's Ferry. At the Democratic Party Convention held in Baltimore, June 18-23, 1860, Wise's name was put in nomination for President; Stephen A. Douglas won the nomination on the second ballot. A delegate to Virginia secession convention, Wise was a Confederate Brigadier General during the Civil War, seeing action at Petersburg (1864) and Appomattox (1865). He died without ever having accepted amnesty for his Confederate service. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the "H" of Henry, lower horizontal fold at the upper loops of the "H", "A" and "W" of signature. Mounting remnants and stains on verso lightly show through at left margin, touching four lines of writing (all legible). Lightly soiled at upper blank margin, shaded at upper right edge. Overall, fine condition.
