American Civil War Brigadier General Horace Porter signed this letter to thank the recipient for a letter, which he read while "convalescing from an attack of the prevailing epidemic here."
Manuscript LS: "Horace Porter". 2 pages, 5¼x6½, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Feb. 8, 1916.In full: "My dear Princess, I have just had the pleasure of reading your very kind note. I am convalescing from an attack of the prevailing epidemic here. When I am ableto go about I shall take occasion to call and pay my respects. Yours very sincerely". Graduating fromWest Pointin 1860, Porter commanded the artillery used in capturing Fort Pulaski which guarded the harbor of Savannah, Georgia, in April, 1862. He saw action at Chickamauga in 1863 for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor 39 years later. In April, 1864, Porter became Aide-de-Camp to General Grant and was with him at Appomattox. After the war he remained a member of Grant's military staff and later became his White House military adviser. Porter became Vice President of the Pullman Car Company after resigning from the Army in 1873. Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Ink transference inside letter (does not touch signature). Paper clip impressions and rust stains at top edge. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
