GENERAL HORACE PORTER
Horace Porter, a brigadier general in the American Civil War, signed this letter to about the Second Peace Conference at the Hague in 1907.
Manuscript LS: "Horace Porter," 2p, 6x7¼, separate joined sheets. Delegation of the United States of America to the Second Peace Conference at the Hague, 1907 July 9. To Rev. Charles E. St. John, Secretary, American Unitarian Association, Boston. In full: "I have had the pleasure of receiving your letter of May 27, which shall have my most careful consideration. It is a matter of great satisfaction to the delegates of the Hague Conference to feel that they are supported by such an influential body as the American Unitarian Association." Graduating fromWest Pointin 1860, Porter commanded the artillery used in capturing Fort Pulaski which guarded the harbor of Savannah, Georgia, in April, 1862. He saw action at Chickamauga in 1863 for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor 39 years later. In April, 1864, Porter became Aide-de-Camp to General Grant and was with him at Appomattox. After the war he remained a member of Grant's military staff and later became his White House military adviser. Fine condition.
