The decorated US Army general turned peace activist signs a handwritten 1962 letter comparing critics of the Cuban revolution to Benedict Arnold.
Autograph Letter signed: "Hugh B Hester", 5½x3¼ post card also bearing his hand printed name "H. B. Hester" in the return address. Return address of St. Petersburg, Florida, but postmarked San Carlos, California, dated in the letter 1962 September 9. Addressed in his hand to Mrs. H.K.T. Thompson, Jr., New York, N.Y. In full: "Have just returned from Europe or I should have thanked your note quite a bit earlier. I seem to recall that the London papers of George III's time had similar reports from Benedict Arnold on the American Revolution as Todd's now on the Cuban Revolution. Thanks." Hugh Bryan Hester 1895-1983 served in the US Army in both World Wars, seeing combat in World War I and earning the Silver Star and the French Croix de Guerre. In World War II he managed supply and procurement on General MacArthur's staff in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he headed the Army's Food and Agriculture Program for occupied Germany. After retiring as a Brigadier General in 1951, Hester emerged as an outspoken critic of US foreign and defense policy, advocating disarmament and world government. He was a frequent speaker at peace rallies during the Vietnam War, and wrote many books and articles critiquing the Cold War (including Twenty-Six Disastrous Years, 1971). Fine condition.
