HUGH HESTER
Autograph Letter (1962) signed twice, discussing his haste to finish a book on Germany.
Autograph Letter signed: "Hugh B. Hester", 5½x3¼ post card, with his name also handwritten in the return address: "H. B. Hester". Return address of Durham, North Carolina, but postmarked San Carlos, Californa, 1962 September 22. Addressed in his hand to Mrs. H. K. T. Thompson, Jr., New York, N.Y. In full: "Yes, I had seen your article in the Independent and thought it fine. Unfortunately, I am trying very hard to assemble the new material for a book on Germany. This I need very much to get out as soon as possible." Hugh Bryan Hester 1895-1983 served in the US Army in both World Wars, seeing combat in World War I and earning the Silver Star and the French Croix de Guerre. In World War II he managed supply and procurement on General MacArthur's staff in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he headed the Army's Food and Agriculture Program for occupied Germany. After retiring as a Brigadier General in 1951, Hester emerged as an outspoken critic of US foreign and defense policy, advocating disarmament and world government. He was a frequent speaker at peace rallies during the Vietnam War, and wrote many books and articles critiquing the Cold War (including Twenty-Six Disastrous Years, 1971). Fine condition.
