BRIGADIER GENERAL ISRAEL VOGDES
He transmits to the Adjutant General the bi-monthly report of
deceased soldiers in the First Artillery.
Manuscript Letter signed: "I. Vogdes" as Colonel, 1st
Artillery, commanding, 1 page, 7¾x9¾. Headquarters 1st Artillery,
Charleston, South Carolina. To the Adjutant General, US Army, Washington,
D.C. In full: I have the honor to transmit herewith Bi-monthly Returns
of Deceased Soldiers 1st Artillery for Jany and Feby 1873. Very respectfully
Your obedient servant". Career soldier Israel Vogdes (1816-1889)
graduated from West Point in 1837, assigned to the artillery.
Captured in Florida by Confederates at Fort Pickens in October 1861, he
was exchanged in August 1862, and appointed a brigadier general in the
Union Army's X Corps. He commanded the Federal forces on Folly Island, and
participated in the Second Battle of Charleston Harbor. He headed the
Military District of Florida in 1864, and finished the war in command of the
defenses of Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia. Reverting to the rank of
colonel in the Regular Army, he returned to the 1st US Artillery as its
commander until his retirement in 1881. Slightly toned around edges. Normal
mailing folds. Stain on bottom left margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
