First Day Cover commemorating the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military award, 20-cent Medal of Honor stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., June 7, 1983 FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. JAMES H. DOOLITTLE was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the first raid over Tokyo in WORLD WAR II (1942). MATTHEW B. RIDGWAY succeeded MacArthur as Allied Commander of the U.N. forces in the Far East during the KOREAN WAR (1951). WILLIAM C. WESTMORELAND commanded the U.S. Military Assistance Command in South Vietnam during the VIETNAM WAR (1964-1968). COLIN L. POWELL was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-1993) during the GULF WAR. Fine condition.
