JAMES H. DOOLITTLE
James Doolittle sends a typed letter to a friend describing his trip out East.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jim", 1p, 7¼x10½. Redondo Beach, California, 1964 January 29. On Space Technology Laboratory, Inc. stationery. To Mr. Moss Patterson, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In full: "Thanks for yours of the fourteenth. It was good to hear from you. Glad the oil is still flowing your way. Joe and I are just back from ten days on the East Coast. Had a fine trip and missed most of the bad weather. Shot a turkey and some quail in South Carolina. We attended the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Honors Night Dinner in New York and I took in the Alfalfa Annual Dinner in Washington, D.C. The President came in to the latter after food had been served and said a few words. He looked fine. Joe joins me in every good wish to you and Nell. As ever". In 1922, Jimmy Doolittle made the first transcontinental flight in less than 24 hours. In the 1920s and 1930s, he set various speed and flight records. In World War II, Doolittle and 79 other fighter pilots ("Doolittle's Raiders") bombed Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first air attack on the Japanese capital. Also hit were targets in Yokohama and other cities, scoring a huge victory for United States morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Doolittle was promoted to Brigadier General the next day and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the raid. Fold creases pass through the "J" of Jim. Fine condition.
