JAMES H. DOOLITTLE
James Doolittle sends a typed letter to pioneer aviator Roscoe Turner concerning a speech.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jim", 1p, 7¼x10½. Los Angeles, 1970 February 12. To pioneer aviator Roscoe Turner concerning a speech. In full: "Thanks for your letter of the ninth with attachments. Your speech of acceptance, as printed in the Congressional Record, was great. They couldn't have honored a finer person. Nothing I'd like better than to be with you at the Wings club when you pass the three-quarter century mark in September. Yu have me by a year and a bit. I'll be 74 in December. Jim Graham was by the house last week. He is better, but still pretty 'shook up' over Blossom's passing. He is full of life but has a little trouble navigating. His nurse and her husband were along. Real nice people and devoted to Jim. Joe joins me in all the best and in the hope that we may see you soon. As ever," TURNER never made it to the Wings Club for his 75th birthday on September 29, 1970; he died at 74 on June 23rd. Known for speed, in the 1920s and 1930s Turner broke the transcontinental speed record more times than any other flyer. In the 1920s and 1930s, DOOLITTLE also set various speed and flight records, many broken by Turner. In WWII, Doolittle and 79 other fighter pilots ("Doolittle's Raiders") bombed Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first air attack on the Japanese capital, scoring a huge victory for United States morale. Great association. Fine condition.
