JAMES H. DOOLITTLE
James Doolittle sends a typed letter to a fan recommending that he reads a book about Doolittle to get the answers to his questions.
Typed Letter Signed: "J. H. Doolittle", 1p, 7¼x10½.Los Angeles, California, 1978 June 1. On his personal imprinted Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co. stationery. To Steve Rubin, Eastchester, New York. In full: "It would be difficult to answer in the space of a letter the questions you asked in your note of the thirtieth. However, there is a book which provides much of the information and probably can be obtained through either your school or public library. It is "Jimmy Doolittle" by Colonel C.V. Glines and was published in 1972 by Macmillan. Best wishes to you and your family. Very sincerely". In 1922, Jimmy Doolittle made the first transcontinental flight in less than 24 hours. In the 1920s and 1930s, he set various speed and flight records. In World War II, Doolittle and 79 other fighter pilots ("Doolittle's Raiders") bombed Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first air attack on the Japanese capital. Also hit were targets in Yokohama and other cities, scoring a huge victory for United States morale at a time when Japan's position in the Pacific seemed impregnable. Doolittle was promoted to Brigadier General the next day and was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for the raid. Fine condition.
