JAMES HERVEY SIMPSON
The young army engineer, engaged in harbor improvements at Presque Isle, Pennsylvania, on Lake Erie, submits a quarterly report of disbursements
Autograph Document signed: "J. H. Simpson/1st Lt. US Dept. Engrs.", 1 page, 10¼x16. Docketed on verso: "Abstract of Disbursements/Presque Isle Harbor". James Hervey Simpson (1813-1883) graduated from West Point in 1833. He fought in the Seminole War (1838) and again in the Civil War, where he was brevetted to brigadier general for meritorious service. (He reverted to the regular rank of colonel after the war.) However, his principal achievements were in engineering and exploration. In 1841, when he submitted these accounts, Simpson was engaged in improvements to Erie Harbor, Pennsylvania, and surveying the Northwestern Lakes. In 1849, he led an exploration of the route from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Santa Fe, in the newly acquired New Mexico territory. Smith, who would attain the rank of brigadier general, wrote several books and articles, including a study of Coronado's search for the legendary seven cities of gold (1869). The US Army Topographical Engineers, formed in 1838, were merged with the Corps of Engineers during the Civil War. Creased from folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
