[STEPHEN KEARNEY]. JAMES SHIELDS and PIERRE SOULÉ. ADS: "Jas Shields" and "Pierre Soulé", 1p, 7¾x9¾. Washington, 1853 March 22. In part: "The bearer Mr. Kearney, as this letter shows has been employed some time as a watchman, and is represented as sober and reliable...I judge from his recommendations that he is capable of being a clerk...." Written on the verso of an ALS: "J.C.G. Kennedy" of the Census Office to Shields recommending Kearney, noting that "Mr Kearney came to me recommended by Genl [Winfield] Scott", stating, in part: "Stephen Kearney has been employed in this Office some Sixteen Months in the capacity of Watchman...." In July 1846, JAMES SHIELDS was commissioned Brigadier General of the Illinois Volunteers for service in the Mexican War. At Cerro Gordo, he led his brigade around the Mexican Army and routed them, but was severely wounded in the battle. After being brevetted Major General for his actions, Shields again distinguished himself by leading a memorable charge at Churubusco. After the war, he served as U.S. Senator from Illinois (1849-1855), Minnesota (1858-1859) and Missouri (1879). Born in France, PIERRE SOULÉ was U.S. Senator from Louisiana for six weeks in 1847 and from 1849-1853. He served as U.S. Minister to Spain from 1853-1855. Show through to Shields' letter of ink stains from Kennedy's side. Creased. Folds touch Shields' signature.
