JAMES SHIELDS
James Shields sends an autograph letter of thanks for looking into the pension of a soldier.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Jas Shields", 1p, 7½x9½. Carrollton, Mo., 1869 July 31. To Hon. Joseph Wilson, Commissioner of General Land Office, Washington, D.C. thanking him for "attending to my request respecting the pension of Bernard Hannroan" and hoping "some of these days to be able to reciprocate it." Shields served in the Black Hawk, Mexican and Civil Wars, rising in rank to Brigadier General. Elected to political office when not fighting, he is the only U.S. Senator to have represented three states: Illinois (1849-1855), Minnesota (1858-1859) and Missouri (1879). Glue stains and silked on verso (light show through at upper and right blank margins touching "Shields"). Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
