JOAB ARWIN STAFFORD
Stafford handwrote, signed and dated this letter to another brevetted brigadier general in 1868. In it, he informs the recipient that eight officers from the American Civil War's Army of the Cumberland, as well as "your humble sevt", would join him.
Autograph letter signed "J.A. Stafford/Brevt. Brig. Gen.". 2 pages (1 page blank), 4¾x7¾ ruled paper with embossing in upper left corner. Lancaster, Ohio, Jan. 6, 1868. Addressed to "Henry M. Cist/Brvt Brig Gen". In part: "Dear Gen.: The following named officers of the late 'Army of the Cumberland' will be with you on the 6th of Feb. from this country". Stafford listed eight names - a colonel, three captains and four lieutenants - as well as "your humble sevt". Stafford (1830-1889) was a Union army officer during the American Civil War. He was a major in the 1st Ohio Infantry Regiment, which became a part of the Army of the Cumberland and which fought at such battles as the Battles of Chattanooga, Stone River and Jones River. After the 1st Ohio mustered out in October of 1864, he formed the 187th Ohio Infantry Regiment, which fought at the Battle of Wyse Fork and the siege of Murfreesboro. Stafford was promoted to colonel by the time of Wyse Fork and was brevetted a brigadier general on March 13, 1865, just before the end of the war. Lightly toned and creased. Page has been torn neatly from a pad or notebook on left. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
