JOHN BRECKINRIDGE CASTLEMAN
Major General, CSA; Brigadier General, USA
Signature: "Jno B. Castleman/Brigadier General U.S.A.", 5½x3. Lifelong Kentuckian John Breckinridge Castleman (1842-1918) joined John Hunt Morgan's Confederate raiders in 1862 and led guerrilla operations of his own, rising to the rank of Major General. Captured in 1864 in the course of a daring attempt to free Confederate prisoners, he was sentenced to death but pardoned by President Lincoln. After the war, he earned a law degree and founded an insurance company. He later served as the state's Adjutant General and Parks Commissioner, in the latter office commissioning famed park planner Frederick Law Olmstead to design the Louisville park system. In the Spanish-American War, he led Kentucky's First Volunteer Infantry, which invaded Puerto Rico. By now a Brigadier General in the US Army, he served as military governor of Puerto Rico. An avid horseman, Castleman was founder and first president of the American Saddlebred Horse Association (1891). (Unlike thoroughbreds, bred specifically for racing, Saddlebred horses were raised for a variety of equestrian roles and were especially esteemed as cavalry mounts.) A statue of Castleman astride his beloved horse Carolina, overlooks Louisville's Cherokee Parkway. According to local legend, the horse changes its stance every New Year's Eve at midnight. Unevenly trimmed. Slightly soiled. Mounting paper remnants on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
