3½x6. Monroe County, 1859 October 17. In part: "In the Circuit Ct of
Monroe C.F. Whitescower, who sues for benefit of James J. Ellison vs J.A. &
R.B. Cook Principal $100.00...." Echols has also penned: "Recd payt of W.
Lively of Monroe County of One hundred & twelve 61/100 Dollars in full of
above debt". Related document on verso. General John Echols, a Harvard
graduate, succeeded Confederate General William W. Loring as commander of the
Army of Southwest Virginia. He was wounded at Kernstown and was with General
John C. Breckinridge at New Market. Uniformly tanned. Lightly soiled. Light show
through of writing on verso.
