Internal Revenue 3-cent stamp picturing Washington on verso above photographer's imprint: "Black & Case/Photographic Artists/Boston/& Newport, R.I." John Francis Appleton (1838-1870) was mustered into service as commander of Company H, 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry in 1861. Leading an assault on Port Hudson, Appleton was the first atop the parapet, so impressing a Confederate officer by his bravery that the Confederate ordered his men not to fire on him. He became Colonel of the 81st Regiment U.S. Colored Infantry, which was organized at Port Hudson, Louisiana on September 2, 1863. The unit was charged with garrison duty at Port Hudson until April 1864. At that time, its name was changed to the 81st United States Colored Troops. Appleton was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. Scratches from original negative have reproduced at background. Creased at tip of lower left blank corner. Slightly soiled. Fine condition.
