JOSEPH H. EATON. Autograph Statement signed: "J.H. Eaton/Br Majr & A.D.C. U.S.A.", 1p, 7½x9¾. Headquarters, Army of Occupation, Camp near Monterey, Mex., 1847 August 12. In part: "I am happy to have it in my power to state that Mr. W.G. Brown, artist from Richmond, Va. has been at the Head Quarters of the Army since the 10th June last, where he has been laboriously and diligently occupied in painting the portraits of Maj. Genl Taylor & the members of his staff, and also in executing a view of the Head Quarters. The portraits are excellent likenesses…." Eaton, also an artist, explains how the portraits were painted (e.g. "repeated and long sittings…in the costume and attitude", "horse of the General") and that "Mr. Brown proposes exhibiting his pictures throughout the country…." Joseph Horace Eaton graduated from West Point in 1835. He then served on the frontier, taught infantry tactics at West Point and fought in the Mexican War, where he served as General Zachary Taylor's Aide-de-Camp. During the Civil War he was a paymaster and was brevetted Brigadier General. Creased and worn. Stained at right portion, touching text and paraph of signature (all words legible). Tackhead-size burn at right edge has removed 1 word. Tack holes at blank corners.
