In full: "Respectfully returned to the 2 Auditor U.S. Try. in response to inquiry by letter of this date. These papers were retained, awaiting action upon the certificate 596.282, as not supposed material in reference to correction." Penned on verso of "Paymaster General's Office, Washington" stationery. Artist Joseph Horace Eaton graduated from West Point in 1835. He then served on the frontier, taught infantry tactics at West Point and fought in the Mexican War, where he served as General Zachary Taylor's Aide-de-Camp. During the Civil War he was a paymaster and was brevetted Brigadier General. Minor stains. Lightly creased.
