Handwritten cover letter as Judge Advocate General, originally attached to a court martial document
Autograph Letter signed: "J Holt/Judge Advocate General", 1 page, 3½x5¼. Bureau of Military Justice, 1869 December 18. In full: "Respectfully returned and referenced to a report made by this Bureau to Genl. Sherman on the 15th instant, in which the views entertained in regard to Captain Bailey's case are so fully expressed as to render further comment upon it unnecessary". Joseph Holt (1807-1894) served as Buchanan's Postmaster General (1859-1861) and Secretary of War ad interim (1861). Although he had been a Stephen A. Douglas Democrat in the election of 1860, Holt gave his earnest support to the Lincoln administration, denounced the policy of "neutrality" in his native state of Kentucky and advocated the Union cause there and elsewhere. He was appointed Judge Advocate General of the Army by President Lincoln and was chief prosecutor at the trial of the conspirators who participated in Lincoln's assassination. Holt had declined two offers of Cabinet posts in the Lincoln administration, and was considered as a possible running mate in Lincoln's 1864 re-election ticket. He remained Judge Advocate General until 1875, the first in that position to hold the rank of brigadier general. Notch at top edge. Corner worn and lightly toned. Unknown stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
