photograph he signed for an admirer
Autograph Note Signed: "Joe", 1p, 6¼x8¼. Scottsdale, Arizona, circa March 1990. Begins:
"Geo. -". In full: "Thats (sic) Sec Navy Frank Knox with me in your picture Just before I got
CHM". Wilson's letter (which was written from Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1990 February
28), in full: "I have included a photograph of yourself, and I was wondering if you would sign it
for me? I have also included a stamped envelope. Good health for you and yours. Thank you very
much for your help." Joseph Jacob Foss (1925-2003) was awarded the Congressional Medal
of Honor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 18, 1943 for his 26 aerial victories
over Guadalcanal (1942-1943). The wife and mother of the Marine Corps Captain were
present at the ceremony. Foss later served as the Governor of South Dakota (1955-1959), a
Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve, the first President of the American Football
League (1959), playing a key role in the creation of the Super Bowl, and President of the
National Rifle Association (1988). When Foss was buried at Arlington National Cemetery
on January 21, 2003, the funeral was attended by Vice President Dick Cheney and retired
Colonel Oliver North, who gave the eulogy. Lightly creased. Ink transference at upper margin,
¼-inch vertical tear at center of upper edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
