BRIGADIER GENERAL JOSEPH J. "JOE" FOSS
Card with ornate black border, signed by the Brigadier General who
produced more aces than any other squadron during World War II
Signature:"Joe Foss, Capt/US MCR/VMF-121". 5x2¾ card.
VMF-121wasFoss' fighter attack squadron during World War II. The
squadron was a charter member of the Cactus Air Force at Guadalcanal and shot
down 208 planes, including Foss' 26 victories. It also produced 14 aces,
more than any other squadron during World War II. Joseph J. Foss
(1925-2003) was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President
Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 18, 1943 for his 26 aerial victories over
Guadalcanal (1942-1943). The wife and mother of the Marine Corps Captain were
present at the ceremony. Foss later served as the Governor of South
Dakota (1955-1959), a Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve, the
first President of the American Football League (1959), playing a key
role in the creation of the Super Bowl, and President of the National Rifle
Association (1988). When Foss was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on
January 21, 2003, the funeral was attended by Vice President Dick Cheney and
retired Colonel Oliver North, who gave the eulogy. Pencil note in unknown hand
