KENNETH ROYALL
The last US Secretary of War and first Secretary of the Army complies
with an autograph request. Signed 3 months before he was fired by President
Truman for resisting desegregation of the armed forces
Typed Note signed: "Kenneth Royall" as Secretary of the
Army, 1p, 5x3. (Washington), 1949 January 3. In full: "I am
pleased to add my autograph to your collection." Kenneth Claiborne Royall
(1894-1971) was the last US Secretary of War (1947) and the first Secretary of
the Army (1947-1949), after the War and Navy Departments were combined in the
Department of Defense. In 1942, as an army general assigned to defend 8 Nazi
saboteurs captured on Long Island, Royall challenged the constitutionality
President Roosevelt's plan to try the Nazi agents in a secret military
court. He case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, which upheld the
President's right to convene a secret military tribunal in wartime. Royall,
however, considered his stand on this issue the most important of his career. He
was dismissed by President Truman in 1949 for taking a stand on a
different issue. He had refused to comply with the President's order to
desegregate the US Army. Lightly shaded. 2 pinhead-size stains at upper
blank margin. Fine condition.
