LUCIUS GARTRELL
The former Confederate general, now an Atlanta lawyer, sent this 1889 ALS discussing photos and engravings of him.
Autograph Letter signed: "L. J. Gartrell", 1 page, 5¾x9¼ letter, affixed to 8½x11 border. Atlanta, Georgia, 1889 August 20. On letterhead of Gartrell & Lawson, Attorneys at Law, to Col. Charles C. Jones, Jr., Augusta, Georgia. In full: "Pardon my delay in answering your esteemed favor of the 13th inst. Have an oil portrait taken some 40 years ago, but have no engraved one. You will find a miserable likeness of me in 'Avery's History of Ga.', so called. If you desire I will have one taken. I send by today's mail a photograph taken by Brady in New York in 1870. [Item not included.] I have the honor to be very truly yours". Lucius Jeremiah "L. J." Gartrell (1821-1891) represented Georgia in the US Congress (1857-1861) and the Confederate Congress (1862-1864). At the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) in 1861, he was colonel commanding the 7th Georgia Infantry. (His 16-year old son died in this battle.) In 1864 he was promoted to Brigadier General, participating in the Carolina campaign in the following year. After the war he practiced law in Atlanta, and was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Georgia in 1882. Lightly toned. Otherwise fine condition.
