NEAL DOW. ALS: "Neal Dow," 1p, 5x7. Portland, 1882 January 10. The Civil War General and Mayor of Portland, Maine drafted his state's prohibition law which cleaned up liquor traffic in Portland. He gained a nationwide reputation and was also the unsuccessful Prohibition Party's nominee for President against Garfield in 1880. He responds to a request to write "a few lines upon the character and life of Abraham Lincoln." In part: "I believe in the Divine inspiration for good - and that God sometimes intervenes in the affairs of man. Abraham Lincoln, in my view, was charged with a decisive mission which he executed wisely and well-and is justly entitled to the remembrance, gratitude and love of all loyal citizens of our Great Republic." Mounting remnants at lower blank portion on verso lightly show through. Fine condition.
