NEAL DOW
The prohibition lobbyist signs his name on this letter from
1877
Autograph letter signed: "Neal Dow", 2p, 3½x6. Portland,
Maine, U.S.A., 1877 December 3. To Mr. Caine. In part: "I rec'd
today a copy of The Argus announcing that you are to be M.P. for
Scarboro, where at I rejoice most heartily. The article did not say that there
is to be an Election - Clerical - or whether the candidacy is only arranged in
advance of a general break up. I do not think it would require a great many men
like you, Sir W, Mr. Whitworth and Mr. Sullivan - to force a policy - some
policy upon the liberal party...." Neal Dow (1804-1897) was a zealous
crusader for the cause of temperance and prohibition, both in Maine and
throughout the country. He formed the Maine Temperance Union in 1838, an
organization that advocated total abstinence from drinking alcohol. Dow lobbied
the state legislature for the passage of a prohibition law, and in 1851 after
he was elected Mayor of Portland, he succeeded. The Maine Law remained in
effect, except for a lapse of three years, until the repeal of National
Prohibition in 1933. Sporadically and lightly stained at upper text. Lightly
creased. Pinhead-size holes at cross folds. Fine condition.
