BRIGADIER GENERAL NEAL DOW - AUTOGRAPH QUOTATION SIGNED 03/20/1895 - HFSID 261540
Price: $400.00
NEAL DOW
Neal Dow signs an autograph quotation.
Autograph quotation signed: "Neal Dow", 1p, 4½x7. 1895
March 20, on a sheet headed "The Autograph Collection of Howes Norris, Jr.".
In full: "`The liquor traffic exists by permission of the Church
membership; they are masters of the situation when they say go and vote go, the
saloons with go.' Christian At Work, New York. Is that true? If so with whom is
the sin & shame, crime of the continuance of that dreadful trade.". In
1851, after a long fight led by Portland's Mayor, Neal Dow, Maine became the
first state to outlaw the sale of all alcoholic beverages, except for
"medicinal, mechanical or manufacturing purposes". Dow, called the "Father of
Prohibition", changed the tactics of the battle against alcohol by adopting a
legislative approach. Rather than changing people's attitudes, Dow's new
reformers changed laws. Lightly soiled, stray ink mark at left margin. Mounting
remnants on verso, light show through at blank corners. Overall, fine
condition.
