ORRIS S. FERRY
Signed autograph letter (1853), refusing to dispense with the testimony of a key witness
Autograph Letter signed: "O S Ferry", 1 page, 7¾x10 blue paper with embossed emblem at upper left. Norwalk, Connecticut, 1853 August 19. To P. C. Herrick, in full: "Upon my return home this evening I received your letter. I cannot consent to release either Mr. Blake or yourself as I consider this point so important as to require the testimony of more than one witness. Personally I would be glad to accommodate all witnesses but I cannot consent to dispense with that which in my honest judgment, the public interest requires. Respectfully yours". Orris Sanford Ferry (1823-1875) was a Connecticut state judge, legislator and prosecuting attorney before being elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican (1859-1861). Defeated for re-election, he volunteered for service in the Union army, participating in the early defense of Washington and attaining the rank of brigadier general. Elected to the US Senate in 1866, he served there until his death. Normal mailing fold creases. Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right corner. Stray ink spots at lower margin. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso with light show-through at right center section. Narrow strip of fabric tape at lower edge of verso. Top and bottom edges crinkled. Otherwise, fine condition.
