ROBERT L. SCHULZ
The executive assistant to President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed and sent this letter on his behalf in response to a request from Theron C. Liddle, the editor of the Deseret News
Typed Letter Signed: "Robert L. Schulz" in black ink. 7¼x10½. Letterhead from the Office of Dwight D. Eisenhower, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Dated December 26, 1968. To Theron C. Liddle. In Part: "The General's doctors are rigidly restricting his dictation and other activities at this time, therefore he is unable to respond personally. I regret to advise you that it will be some time before matters such as you mention in your letter can be brought to his attention".Just over three months from the day that this letter was sent, former President Eisenhower passed away. Theron C. Liddle (1912-1977) was a writer who published a series titled A Thought for Today throughout the 1960s, encompassing a total of five volumes. These books were collections of quotes from notable people such as Eisenhower that he hand-selected from speeches and publications. He was managing editor at the Deseret News from 1949-1971. Brigadier General Robert L. Schulz (1907-1984)was appointed to be the Aide-de-Camp to General Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1947. At that time, Eisenhower was the Chief of Staff and General of the Army. An Aide-de-camp (translated from French into "helper in the camp) is an individual who acts as a personal assistant. Because of Eisenhower's status as a five-star General, he was allowed to retain Schulz even after he retired from the United States Army. Schulz followed Eisenhower for the rest of the General's life, serving as an aide while he was President of Columbia University, President of the United States, and even in his last years after his tenure of Commander-in-Chief ended. After Eisenhower's death, Schulz was appointed Special Assistant to the President for Liaison with Former Presidents in 1969.Light mailing creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
