ROBIN OLDS
The Brigadier General writes a letter to James A. vanBuskirk , a middle school teacher who wrote Olds after the September 11 attacks
Typed Letter Signed: "Robin Olds," in black ink. 8½x11. Brigadier General Robin Olds USAF (Ret). Steamboat Springs, CO. January 19, 2002. In part: "...As to your reaction to September 11, may I suggest you consider an axiom of human existence in trying to understand how such an act can occur: '...spreading fear in the name of righteousness'. Think about that as a concerted action, deliberately fostered by those seeking the power to sway others to their command. Consider it in the light of human history, not just in the religious sense, but in all things we humans do..." In August 1944, Robin Olds (1922-2007) became an ace after his first two combat missions, claiming two FW-190s on the 14th and three Me-109s on the 25th. He ended WWII with 13 victories. In September 1966, Olds became commanding officer of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ubon, Thailand. In 1967, he shot down four MiGs. General Olds is the only ace with air-to-air victories in nonconsecutive wars. Promoted to Brigadier General, General Olds became Commander of Cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1968. Olds, who retired in 1973, was married to Hollywood actress Ella Raines from 1947 until her death in 1988. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
