THEODORE ROOSEVELT, JR. Fabric signed: "Theodore Roosevelt" on irregularly cut 4¼x2¾ purple cotton piece of fabric for a quilt. The eldest son of Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt III (1887-1944), known as Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., followed his father into Republican New York State politics. First serving in the State Assembly (1919-1920), Theodore, Jr., like his father and his cousin Eleanor's husband, Franklin, was then appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1921-1925). He ran for Governor of New York in 1924, losing to Al Smith, but later served as Governor of Puerto Rico (1929-1932) and Governor General of the Philippines (1932-1933). During WWII, Brigadier General Roosevelt, a WWI veteran, was attached to the 4th U.S. Infantry Division, Normandy in June 1944. On July 12, 1944, shortly after leading his men onto Utah Beach, he died of a heart attack brought on by extreme exhaustion. For his bravery and valor during WWII, Roosevelt was awarded Purple Heart and a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor. Slightly frayed at top and left edges. Pinholes touch "o" of "Theodore" and first "o" of "Roosevelt". Otherwise, fine condition.
