THOMAS L. CLINGMAN
The Confederate general and "Prince of Politicians" signs in black ink
Signature: "T.L. Clingman/Asheville/N.C.", in black ink, 3¾x1½. Thomas L. Clingman (1812-1897), a skilled orator called "the Prince of Politicians", represented North Carolina in the US House (1843-1845, 1847-1858) and Senate (1858-1861). Originally a staunch Whig, advocating the Whig program of federal support for internal improvements and fighting a duel with a Democratic legislator, he broke with the Whigs over the slavery issue, and was elected to the Senate as a Democrat. Refusing to resign from the US Senate, he was expelled for supporting succession. During the Civil War he commanded a brigade of North Carolina infantry, fighting through the major battles of the Eastern Theater from the Peninsula (1862) to Bentonville (1865). After the war he was an explorer and surveyor of the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee, a lawyer, and an inventor credited with two patents. Toned. Irregularly cut. Left edge notched and frayed. Slight surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
