Signature: "Thomas M. Browne/ Indiana" in black ink. 7¼x3 clipping. Thomas M. Browne (1829-1891) was a United States Representative from Indiana. After opening a law practice in 1849, Browne joined local politics, first serving as prosecuting attorney for the thirteenth judicial circuit in 1855, a position he served three terms in, later working as secretary of the state senate in 1861, and as a member of the state senate in 1863. He served as Captain of Company B of the Seventh Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Cavalry of the Union Army, eventually promoted to the rank of brevetted brigadier general in 1865. Browne continued in local politics after the war, and in 1877 was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held for seven terms, serving as chairman of the Committee on Invalid Pensions and Committee on Revision of the Laws. Irregularly cut. Left edge frayed with small tears. Toned. Small pinpoint stains throughout. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
