BROOKS ATKINSON
The drama critic sends a letter regarding reviews about a play
TLS: "Brooks Atkinson", 1p, 5½x8½. New York, 1941 October 28. On letterhead of "The New York Times" to Miss Louise Mace, Springfield, Mass. In full: "It is very pleasant to hear from you again and to know that you felt about 'Candle in the Wind' as I did. A number of people seem to be disappointed with that play and I have been hearing from a few of them this week. Yes, I certainly remember the time you visited us here. I hope you will not hesitate to drop in again when you are down this way. I did read, with much regret, about the death of Mr. Jenckes. I am glad to have received word about Mr. Callaghan. I cannot imagine how the Springfield Daily News gets out if Mr. Callaghan is not there to do everything including setting the type." Handwritten postscript: "Thanks for letting me read your excellent Sunday column. Some of it made me feel like a plagiarist." The stage production of Candle in the Wind ran from 1941-1942. In the year of this letter, Atkinson (1894-1984) took a leave of absence as drama critic at "The New York Times" to serve as a correspondent in WWII. He won a 1947 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for his articles on Russia. He started at "The New York Times" as Editor of the Sunday literary section in 1922 and became the paper's drama critic in 1926. Fine condition.
