BROOKS ATKINSON
The drama critic sends a letter discussing his work
TLS: "J. Brooks Atkinson", 1p, 8½x11. New York, [1931] December 11. On letterhead of
The New York Times to Mr. Lucas. In full: "I am very glad to know that you enjoyed East
of the Hudson, and that you find things of mine that you like in the Times. I quite agree with
you that if John Barrymore could be persuaded to come back to the stage it would bring a
fresh spirit to the whole profession". Atkinson (1894-1984) started at "The New York Times" as
Editor of the Sunday literary section in 1922 and became the paper's drama critic in 1926.
Except for a leave of absence to serve as a war correspondent in WWII, Atkinson remained in
the position until 1960. His East of the Hudson was published in 1931. JOHN
BARRYMORE had last performed on the stage in Hamlet eight years earlier in 1923. He
returned to the stage in 1940 for 117 performances of My Dear Children, a new play
directed by Otto Preminger. Atkinson won a 1947 Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for his
articles on Russia. The Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York was named in his honor.
