Fuller (1895-1983) is best known for his development of the geodesic dome. This dome, which has the dimensions, weight and mass to allow it to sit directly on the ground as a complete structure, was developed in the 1940s by Fuller. The geodesic dome housed the U.S. exhibition at the Canadian Universal and International Exhibition in Montreal (Expo '67), which opened on April 27, 1967. Fuller, a futurist who asserted that all human needs could be met through technology and planning, opened up new possibilities for "Spaceship Earth" (a term that he coined). "Bucky", who also coined "synergetics", held patents to over 2,000 inventions, including a pole-suspended Dymaxion House (1927), the Dymaxion Air-ocean World Map (1943) and a World Game (1969) that predicted and solved world problems. A prolific author, he received numerous awards, including the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture from Queen Elizabeth II.
