Two early photos, each inscribed by one of the Abbotts to another Betty
Two items: 1) Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Betty not my Betty/but you can be my Betty/when Betty throws me down/Bud Abbott/Social Maids/1948". Vintage b/w, 8x10. A few scattered dings and surface marks (the latter to Bud's forehead). Light creases. Otherwise, fine condition. 2) Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Betty/Lots of Good Luck/Sincerely/Betty Abbott". Vintage b/w 8x10. Light creases and is slightly silvered. Otherwise fine condition. BUD ABBOTT (1897-1974) formed with Lou Costello (1906-1959) one of the greatest comedy teams in the history of show business. With Abbott as straight man and Costello as clown, they found popular success from vaudeville and burlesque to radio, Broadway, films and television. Their "Who's on First?" routine is enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Abbott's last role was as his own voice in Hanna-Barbera's Abbott and Costello cartoon series. BETTY ABBOTT, born Jennie Mae Pratt, married Bud in 1918; the two began performing together in 1924. The Abbotts, who reaffirmed their marriage in a Jewish ceremony in 1950, 32 years after their Christian wedding, remained a couple until his death. The Social Maids burlesque company was active in the early decades of the 20th century. Two items.
