This card is signed by the World War II flying ace who shot down five
enemy planes within the same year
Signature: "Bud Pool" in black ink. 5x3. Kenneth "Bud" Pool
(b. 1923) was a World War II flying ace. After attending a few years at
Colorado A&M University he was enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He graduated
from flight training a year later and was commissioned a second lieutenant then
joined the 318th Fighter Group in Hawaii in March, 1943. He entered combat
with the 35th Fighter Squadron, 8th Fighter Group at Finschaven, New Guinea
in January, 1944. In his first action, Second Lieutenant Pool shot down two
Japanese A6M3 Type 32 Zeros. He became an ace on November 6, 1944
when he shot down a single Nakajima Ki-61 Hien, codenamed "Tony", while flying
from an airfield on Morotai.
Pool was credited with 5 confirmed victories and 1 probable, and
was the recipient of 2 Bronze Stars, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 3
Air Medals. Corners slightly rounded. Otherwise, fine
condition.
