Shown with Howdy Doody, for whom he also signs
Inscribed Photograph Signed: "Hi Rick/All the best -/Howdy/Doody/&/Buffalo/Bob". B/w, 8x10. Pioneer children's television personality Buffalo Bob Smith (1917-1998) hosted The Howdy Doody Show over most of its 13-year run (2,543 episodes, 1947-1960) except when he was sidelined for less than a year with a near-fatal heart attack in 1954. The Howdy Doody Show was the first network children's show to run five days a week, the first network show of the day (when the show first debuted, it was preceded by the daily test pattern), the first television show ever broadcast in color and the first show ever to air more than 1,000 continuous episodes. Each show began with Buffalo Bob asking the audience of children (known as the "Peanut Gallery): "Say kids, what time is it"? The "Peanut Gallery", would respond in unison: "It's Howdy Doody time!" A decade after the show was cancelled in September 1960, Buffalo Bob made huge comeback on the college campus circuit, and he continued to successful appearances in person, on TV and in films. Despite his popularity, Buffalo Bob's one attempt to bring Howdy Doody back as a regular series in 1976 ended in failure. Smith was a radio singer and variety show host before becoming "Buffalo Bob." Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
