BUFFALO BOB SMITH
Color still showing Howdy Doody with the clown Clarabell, one in a series of photos promoting the classic children's TV show
Printed Photograph signed: "Howdy/& Bob Smith". Color, 8x9½. Promotional still showing the title puppet with the clown Clarabell Hornblow. The Howdy Doody Show was the first network children's show to run five days a week, the first network show of the day (in the beginning it was preceded by the daily test pattern), the first television show ever broadcast in color and the first show ever to air more than 1,000 continuous episodes. On the air from 1947-1960, 2,543 episodes were televised. Each show began with Buffalo Bob asking the audience of children: "Say kids, what time is it"? The audience, called the "Peanut Gallery", would respond in unison: "It's Howdy Doody time!" Clarabell, played initially by future "Captain Kangaroo" Bob Keeshan and from 1954 by Lew Anderson, was fond of squirting Smith with a seltzer bottle. Mute until the final episode in 1960, Clarabell (Anderson) spoke the shows final line, "Goodbye, kids." Smith, a popular radio singer before becoming the famed TV host, died in 1998. Printed at lower left: "Howdy Doody Series/EIGHT PICTURES, GET THEM ALL". Copyright BOB SMITH at lower right corner. Horizontal folds do not touch writing. Fine condition.
