Oscar-winning actor Burl Ives signed this 12-month contract in 1949
to hire MCA Artists, Ltd. as his agent in the motion picture industry for a 10
percent commission. Accompanied by 8 pages of miscellaneous related
documents.
Contract signed "Burl Ives" as Actor and initialed
"BI" twice. Also signed by a representative of MCA Artists, Ltd. in blue
ink and initialed in black ink. Carbon copy notations in unknown hand. 9 pages,
8½x11, single-sided, partial carbon copy, two binder holes at top edge. New
York City, Aug. 12, 1949. Ives signed this 12-month contract in order
to hire MCA as his agent in the motion picture industry for a 10 percent
commission. Lightly toned and creased. Initials on page 1 touch. Light tears on
right side of pages 1 and 9. Staple holes in top left corner, with missing
corner on page 9. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: 8 pages of
correspondence, most unsigned, in regards to this contract. Most 8½x11, two
binder holes at top, bound with 1 staple. Dated between April 4, 1949 and
Aug. 29, 1949. Correspondence between MCA, Ives, the Screen Actors Guild and
the American Guild of Variety Artists, most of them cover letters,
acknowledgements of receipt or interoffice memos at MCA. Lightly toned and
creased. Lead and red pencil marks in unknown hand. Staple holes at top edge.
Light tears at top edge and bottom right corner. Carbon copy marks. Otherwise in
fine condition. Ives (1909-1995, born Burle Icle Ivanhoe in Hunt,
Illinois)was both an Academy and Golden Globe winner for Best Actor
(The Big Country, 1958) and a popular balladeer (Itty Bitty Tear,
My Funny Way of Laughing, Have a Holly Jolly Christmas). His
feature film credits include Smoky (1946, his debut), East of
Eden (1955), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958, as Big Daddy),
Desire Under the Elms (1959, as Ephraim Cabot), Let No Man
Write My Epitaph (1960), Summer Magic (1963), The Brass Bottle
and Ensign Pulver (both 1964), and Ives also starred in two popular
television miniseries, Captains and the Kings (1976) and Roots
(1977), as well as a number of made-for-television movies, including the
animated holiday favorite, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964).
Early in his career, Ives was also heard on the radio series The Wayfaring
Stranger, and he later appeared in the TV series OK Crackerby (1965)
and The Bold Ones: The Lawyers (1969).
