Contract signed: "Burt Lancaster" in ink as Artist on page 42, 49p, 8½x13, separate sheets, stapled onto 9x13½ blue sheet. No place, 1949 July 9. Agreement between Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. and Lancaster for the actor to appear in three motion pictures. The contract was to commence on December 15, 1949 and continue for a period of 207 consecutive weeks. Lancaster was to be paid $5,357.14 per week for a period of 14 consecutive weeks for each film. The contract covers a number of points, including publicity, amenities (including a "star dressing room"), financial considerations should Lancaster be unable to perform as contracted, billing (Lancaster was to receive "star or co-star billing") and the legal obligations of both parties. Also signed by an Assistant Treasurer for the Producer, Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc. From 1950-1953, the time period covered by this contract, Lancaster starred in The Flame and the Arrow (1950), Jim Thorpe - All American (1951), The Crimson Pirate (1952) and South Sea Women, His Majesty O'Keefe and Three Sailors and a Girl (all 1953) for Warner Bros. In 1949, the year he signed this contract, Lancaster was seen on the big screen in the Paramount film, Rope of Sand. Rugged, athletic and handsome, Burt Lancaster (1913-1994) enjoyed phenomenal success from his first film, The Killers, to his last, Field of Dreams, over a career spanning more than four decades. Lancaster won the 1961 Best Actor Academy Award for his superb portrayal of the title character, a disreputable evangelist, for Elmer Gantry. Some of his other career highlights include Sorry, Wrong Number, Come Back, Little Sheba, The Rose Tattoo, Trapeze, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Judgment at Nuremberg, The Birdman of Alcatraz, The Professionals and Atlantic City. Slightly creased. Staple holes at upper blank margins of all pages. Paper clip lower right margin page 21.
