BURTON K. WHEELER
Ink signature on a small card attached to a page with his franked Senate transmittal letter
Signature: "B. K. Wheeler", 3¼x1½ card, affixed to an 8½x11 page, which also bears a transmittal envelope from the US Senate Committee on Interstate Commerce bearing his ink stamp frank. BURTON K. WHEELER (1882-1975) was a Democratic Senator from Montana (1923-1947), but broke with his Party to become a Vice-Presidential candidate on the Progressive Party ticker (with Robert LaFollette) in 1924. He was an outspoken supporter of organized labor and of racial equality. Wheeler supported the New Deal agenda of Franklin Roosevelt, but strongly opposed what he saw as FDR's drift toward World War II. He opposed the draft and aid to Britain, and accused Hollywood of crafting pro-war propaganda. Defeat in the Democratic Primary in 1946 foiled his bid for a fifth term in the Senate. From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Ink lightly beaded (legible). Lightly worn at top edge. Fine condition. Otherwise, fine condition.
