page, which also bears a transmittal envelope from the US Senate Committee on
Interstate Commerce bearing his ink stamp frank. BURTON K. WHEELER
(1882-1975) was a Democratic Senator from Montana (1923-1947), but
broke with his Party to become a Vice-Presidential candidate on the
Progressive Party ticker (with Robert LaFollette) in 1924. He was an
outspoken supporter of organized labor and of racial equality. Wheeler
supported the New Deal agenda of Franklin Roosevelt, but strongly opposed
what he saw as FDR's drift toward World War II. He opposed the draft and aid
to Britain, and accused Hollywood of crafting pro-war propaganda. Defeat in the
Democratic Primary in 1946 foiled his bid for a fifth term in the Senate. From
the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and
squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward went
on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the
cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Ink lightly beaded
(legible). Lightly worn at top edge. Fine condition. Otherwise, fine
condition.
